Village Events Calendar
Introduction
Elmton is very similar to many english villages where key seasonal events are celebrated which helps the community create a special bond which in turn creates a welcoming atmosphere for visitors to the village.
Elmtons anchor events are:
Harvest festival
The Harvest festival celebration is predominantly based around St Peters Church and as Elmton historically has very strong roots within the agricultural community this is still to this day a very special event for the entire village.
Well Dressing - JUNE 29th – July 1st 2007
The Well Dressing and Summer fair is the villages most prestigious event and it brings the villagers together to welcome visitors who travel to see the weekends events unfold. The weekend of celebration starts with the blessing of the three well dressings situated within the village by the local vicar, after each blessing a troop of Morris dancers do a traditional jig which helps to create an old English atmosphere to open the weekends festivities.
Lord Conyers Morris Men will help start the weekend with the traditional Blessing of the Wells on Friday June 29th at 7:00 pm. The Rev. David Hull will lead the proceedings.
The blessing of the wells is held on the last friday of June and starts at St Peters Church
After the blessing of the wells the focus turns to the summer fair which is held on the village green. There are a number of stalls which are designed to cater for a fun day out for all ages. There are horse rides coconut shies to bouncy castles for the children and elephant stalls and tombolas and a brass band for the adults. If that becomes too much for you, you can always retreat to the old school house for a cream tea. The whole weekends events are supported by the village raffle and any profits go to the upkeep of the St Peters Church which is seen as an important focal point of village life.
Around the village there will be the three Well Dressings to view. These will be placed at the top and bottom wells and the Church and have been designed and made by local people and the children from Creswell School . While you are walking round the village why not vote for your favourite scarecrow. In past years we have had many novel and interesting themes. Then why not sit down and relax in the Old School Room where you can treat yourself to a delicious cream tea after viewing the Well Dressings.
The afternoon events draw to a close and the evening proceeding move their focus to the nearby Cresswell Social Centre where a traditional Celidh dance is enjoyed and the raffle is drawn.
This is a fun event for family friends and visitors.
Village Fair
The events continue on Saturday with the Village Fair at 2:00pm on Elmton Green. There will be many stalls there for old and young alike. Let the children get rid of their excess energy on the Bouncy Castle; try your luck on the Tombola, Football Game or Coconut Shy. Listen to the Brass Band, buy one of the excellent Home Made Cakes or purchase some Fresh Produce or Plants. The children will love the Straw Bales.
Our famous local heritage site Creswell Crags will be giving a display. There will be many other Games & Stalls for your enjoyment. When you’ve visited all the stalls move down the village to view the Church where there will be a display by the Local History Group. The main feature of the display is Elmton’s most famous son Jedediah Buxton the calculating genius who could do complex sums in his head. 2007 is the 300th anniversary of his birth and the exhibition will celebrate this most fascinating man.
